Austin-Area Donors Prioritize Hunger and Housing
Fidelity Charitable report shows Austin ranks high in giving frequency, with strong support for organizations serving basic human needs
Austin Social Impact News is produced by Grateful Giving, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit tech startup focused on transforming every purchase into a force for good.

A report from Fidelity Charitable offers a detailed look at how donors in the Austin area chose to give, and the findings reflect a strong and consistent commitment to human services, especially hunger relief and homelessness prevention.
Austin ranked as one of the top cities in the country for granting frequency from donor-advised funds. This means that local donors using these funds made charitable grants at a higher-than-average rate, showing that generosity here is not only present but also proactive. On average, Fidelity Charitable donors in Austin recommended 13.7 grants, compared to a national average of 11.8.
The most commonly supported organizations by Austin-area donors were ones focused on food access, shelter, and emergency services. Among the top ten charities were the Central Texas Food Bank, Mobile Loaves & Fishes, and Caritas of Austin—each playing a critical role in addressing basic human needs for vulnerable populations across the region.
The report also noted that Austin donors tend to be consistent in their giving habits. More than 70 percent of local donor-advised fund holders supported the same nonprofits year after year, which is well above the national average. This pattern suggests a strong alignment between donors and the missions they support, as well as a long-term investment in solving complex social issues.
In terms of overall dollars granted, the Austin area ranked 20th nationwide, with more than $194 million distributed through Fidelity Charitable donor-advised funds. While this places Austin slightly lower in terms of total volume compared to some larger cities, it remains a powerful indicator of regional generosity, especially when viewed through the lens of giving frequency and cause alignment.
This data points to a deeper truth: people in the Austin area are not just giving, they are giving with purpose. They are directing resources to where they are needed most and doing so with consistency and care. These habits build a strong foundation for long-term impact, especially for organizations serving those at risk of being left behind.
In a world where generosity can sometimes feel fleeting, Austin’s approach tells a different story. It is one of sustained commitment, thoughtful action, and the belief that every donation—large or small—can change lives.
