Austin to Host 2025 Carter Work Project for Affordable, Sustainable Housing
Volunteers and partners will build new homes in Whisper Valley
Austin Social Impact News is produced by Grateful Giving, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit tech startup focused on transforming every purchase into a force for good.

This fall, hundreds of volunteers will gather in Central Texas with hammers in hand and purpose in their hearts. From October 26 to 31, 2025, Austin Habitat for Humanity will host the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project—an internationally recognized effort that brings people together to build homes, strengthen neighborhoods, and advance the cause of affordable housing.
The 2025 project will take place in Whisper Valley, a forward-thinking development in East Austin known as the nation’s first fully geothermal neighborhood. This year’s focus on sustainability reflects a growing commitment to both environmental responsibility and long-term affordability. By combining clean energy infrastructure with safe, durable housing, the initiative sets a powerful example for what the future of homebuilding can look like.
Volunteers from across the country will join local residents, businesses, and nonprofit partners to construct multiple new homes during the week-long build. These homes will be purchased by families who qualify through Austin Habitat’s affordable homeownership program, which provides access to zero-interest mortgages and financial education to ensure lasting stability.
The Carter Work Project, founded by President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn in 1984, has become a symbol of hands-on compassion. The couple spent decades volunteering on job sites, helping to raise walls and lift spirits alongside homeowners and volunteers. While the Carters are no longer active on build sites, their legacy continues through each structure raised and every family supported.
Hosting this project is a significant milestone for Austin Habitat for Humanity, which has already helped more than 500 families achieve homeownership in Central Texas. The organization’s leadership sees the 2025 event as a chance to bring even more visibility and momentum to the affordable housing movement in the region.
At a time when housing prices continue to rise and the path to homeownership feels out of reach for many, this effort is a powerful reminder that change is possible. When people come together with shared purpose, they create more than buildings—they create hope, opportunity, and a foundation for future generations.
The Carter Work Project will leave a lasting imprint not only on Whisper Valley, but also on the hearts of everyone who shows up, swings a hammer, or lends support in any way.
