HAAM Day Turns 20: Music for Healthcare

A record-setting day of concerts keeps Austin musicians healthy

Every September, Austin pulses with music—but HAAM Day is a special kind of rhythm. In 2025, the 20th annual HAAM Day Music Festival unfolded across the city, delivering more than 250 live performances at 100+ venues in support of the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). This isn’t just a celebration—it’s a lifeline.

HAAM’s mission: provide medical, dental, vision, and mental health services to low-income working musicians in greater Austin. Because the city that bills itself the “Live Music Capital” also has a harsh contradiction—many of its artists struggle to afford basic healthcare. HAAM bridges that gap by connecting artists to preventive and specialty care so they can keep performing without risking their health.

This year’s target was ambitious: $850,000. Early reports indicate HAAM is on track—or even poised to surpass it. With generous donors, sponsors, and community energy behind it, HAAM Day isn’t just a fundraiser—it’s a statement: that the health of our creative community is worth investing in.

For the musicians, HAAM Day carries real weight. As one artist shared:

“HAAM keeps the music alive by keeping musicians healthy.”

The sentiment isn’t just poetic—it’s practical. Health crises, untreated conditions, or lack of preventive care can pull artists off the stage or out of revenue-generating gigs. With HAAM’s support, they can focus more on their art and less on medical uncertainty.

That said, the success of HAAM Day reflects more than just fundraising: it reflects community collaboration. Sponsors like PNC, SXSW, and C3 Presents help amplify reach. Local venues, restaurants, even grocery stores host micro-shows. The whole city becomes the stage, and everyone’s invited.

Still, HAAM’s reliance on an annual fundraiser underscores a structural issue: should access to healthcare for working artists rest on one day of volunteer energy and community goodwill? HAAM and its supporters argue yes—for now—but also hope for more stable, long-term funding models.
