The New Philanthropists Champion Diversity in Nonprofit Leadership

Austin-based initiative equips nonprofits to build more inclusive boards and executive teams

Austin Social Impact News is produced by Grateful Giving, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit tech startup focused on transforming every purchase into a force for good.

A more diverse and representative nonprofit sector is taking shape in the Austin area, thanks to the work of The New Philanthropists (TNP). This local organization is committed to increasing leadership opportunities for people of color in nonprofit governance and executive roles. By focusing on training, relationship-building, and visibility, TNP is helping organizations better reflect the communities they serve.

Founded with a vision of equity and inclusion, TNP provides a range of programs designed to address gaps in nonprofit leadership. Their Board Mentors of Color initiative pairs emerging leaders with experienced nonprofit board members to foster mentorship and board-readiness. The program builds skills while also creating critical connections between individuals and organizations.

In addition to mentorship, TNP offers events and workshops that educate nonprofits on the importance of board diversity. These sessions help organizations recognize unconscious bias, develop inclusive recruitment strategies, and establish more equitable leadership practices. TNP also collaborates with nonprofits to support culture change from within, helping them shift from performative diversity efforts to meaningful, lasting change.

One of TNP’s signature tools is the Board Matching Program, a searchable directory that helps nonprofits find and connect with qualified candidates interested in board service. This resource simplifies what can often be a difficult or unfamiliar process, allowing nonprofits to build more inclusive and representative boards.

The impact is growing. TNP’s work has supported hundreds of leaders and dozens of nonprofit organizations throughout the region. As more individuals with diverse backgrounds gain access to leadership opportunities, the entire sector benefits from broader perspectives and stronger decision-making.

TNP’s mission is rooted in the idea that real change happens when power is shared. By preparing leaders of color to take their place at decision-making tables, and by supporting organizations in transforming their cultures, TNP is building a future where leadership reflects the diversity of the region.

In a time when representation matters more than ever, this work is both timely and necessary. The nonprofit sector plays a critical role in addressing social challenges. When leadership is inclusive, solutions become more relevant, partnerships more meaningful, and outcomes more just. The New Philanthropists is not just creating new seats at the table. They are helping to reshape the table itself.
