UT Austin’s Social Impact BuildFest Blends Technology and Purpose
Students and nonprofits team up to create immersive media projects that address real-world challenges across the Austin area

Each spring, the University of Texas at Austin becomes a hub of creativity and purpose through the Social Impact BuildFest, a weekend event hosted by the Texas Immersive Institute. This high-energy gathering brings together students, nonprofit leaders, and creative professionals to collaborate on immersive media projects aimed at tackling real-world social challenges.
Held at the Moody College of Communication, BuildFest challenges participants to develop prototypes for social impact campaigns that use immersive technology such as augmented reality, virtual reality, projection mapping, and spatial audio. Teams are given just 48 hours to explore, design, and pitch ideas that center the voices of underserved populations while amplifying the mission of local nonprofit organizations.
In one example, students partnered with six Austin-area nonprofits across a range of causes, from environmental sustainability to disability inclusion and refugee support. The event began with a “reverse pitch” in which nonprofits presented their current challenges and aspirations. From there, interdisciplinary teams formed and jumped straight into ideation and development, guided by mentors with expertise in storytelling, technology, and human-centered design.
The resulting projects were ambitious and inspiring. One team created an augmented reality experience to help children with disabilities better understand and communicate their emotions. Another designed a mobile-based immersive story to increase public empathy for refugees navigating the resettlement process in Texas. These concepts not only demonstrated technical creativity but also reflected a deep sensitivity to the real needs of local communities.
BuildFest is more than a student competition. It is a platform for innovation with purpose. By connecting future media professionals with mission-driven organizations, the event helps bridge the gap between emerging technology and human-centered social change. Participants leave with hands-on experience, new connections, and a deeper understanding of how their skills can contribute to the public good.
What makes this event especially powerful is its focus on inclusion, collaboration, and shared impact. Every voice is welcomed, every story matters, and every challenge is approached with care. In just one weekend, students learn what is possible when storytelling meets empathy and technology meets intention.
Through BuildFest, the next generation of creators is learning not just how to build, but why to build. And for the nonprofits involved, the event offers a glimpse of what bold, creative partnerships can help accomplish.
